This past Sunday we headed out to SLC for our annual Sunday outing which includes The Spoken Word at the Conference Center, followed by brunch at the Grand America buffet.

The Adams family, Maggie and I had to sit in the Little Theater for the broadcast because the kids aren't old enough to sit in the main area where The Spoken Word is recorded live each week. Gotta say, I just love the Mack Wilbert arrangement of "Come, Come Ye Saints". I'm not one to get teary-eyed, but every time I hear this version, I can't help it. It's absolutely beautiful.

At our school's spring Art Auction, my bid won Ian's teacher's Teacher Time, which consisted of an authentic Spanish paella dinner. Mrs. Veronica's husband is the one who makes the paella and he only has the weekends free to make it, especially since it takes a good 2 hours to make. The paella he made consisted of chicken, pork, red peppers, lima beans, and string beans. It was absolutely delicious! This meal is actually one of Olivia's. Of course, she doesn't get it at our house, but when our school's 3rd graders put on Esplanolania every year, she doesn't mind offering to volunteer just so she can get a few bowls of paella.

IAN'S 1st GRADE XMAS PROGRAM

Along with a few songs, Ian and his classmates put on mini skits showcasing holiday events that happen in Spain and Mexico, such as Las Posadas, the 3 Wisemen, the ringing in of the New Years while eating 12 lucky grapes (this is the skit Ian was a part of), and Christmas Eve.

Ian was also one of the kids who opened up the night's performance by translating the Spanish introduction for the audience. We had to take out the word "first" from his part because he's lost both his front top 2 teeth and "f's" aren't the easiest for him to say just now.

For the evening's performance, the Kindergarteners sang a variety of Christmas songs from around the world (Love the "burrito" song...and it's about a donkey not a Taco Bell delicacy!) and danced the Sevillana - a dance from Spain that Maggie's teacher taught all the kids.

Ian and Maggie both entered our school's Barnes and Noble art/essay contest this year. The theme was "I Am Thankful For...". They both won 1st place in their grade and received a $5 gift card to the bookstore. Maggie, of course, spent hers immediately on a Barbie coloring book, but Ian wanted to save his.

ROBERTS WINDOW ART CONTEST

Ian was one of three winners of the Roberts Craft Store Holiday Window Art Contest at the Clinton location.

Due to the cold temperatures that hit earlier in the week, instead of painting his winning artwork directly onto the store front windows, Roberts provided him with a piece of mat board to paint his art on.

He had to complete it before Thanksgiving, so we stopped in the day before and spent about three hours working on it. Ian had to transpose his original concept onto the large mat board and paint with tempera. Once it dried, he outlined his images with Sharpie.

We haven't actually seen it up in the window yet, but hopefully we can make it out there soon.

A favorite toy store of ours is The Three Little Monkeys (http://www.3littlemonkeys.com/read/coloring-contest-winner/) in Fruit Heights.

Recently, they held a coloring contest and all 4 of the kids entered. We found out last week that Jake was one of the 2 winners. He received a $10 gift card to the store.

Jake's Sunday Birthday Dinner

What does Jake's favorite Sunday dinner entail?...of course, chicken wings, rice, cooked carrots, cabbage salad with "cruchies" (aka Ramen Noodles), and chocolate milk in the special birthday cup.

Wondering why 3 candles when Jake is turning 12?...well, we forgot the candles and Gram Mad didn't have enough, so "1" and "2" makes for "12"!!!

The "Strawberry Napoleon" was the birthday dessert Brian picked up from SLC's Gourmandise Bakery(http://www.gourmandies.com/index.html).

It looks really rich, but actually the flavors are very subdued, but it tasted so good. It has layers of puff pastry, light and flaky, filled with custard cream and cut-up fresh strawberries, dusted with confectioners sugar.

Grandma Mad invited us to her work's Trunk or Treat event. We met the Adams, the Paynes, and friends at Chick-Fil-A for a quick bite to eat before heading to AutoLiv.

Every year they close off their parking lot and the employees park their cars and decorate their trunks and invite their families to come and go around to collect oodles of candy. But when we arrived at the "ideal" time, all of Ogden must have go the memo...the line wrapped all around the entire lot...it took us an hour to get to the actual entrance.

But it was worth it.

It was Red Ribbon Week at our school. They held an art contest for all kids, K-6th grade to enter. The theme this year was "Why I Choose to Be Drug Free".

My kids each worked on something to enter. Liv, Ian, and Mags drew a picture but Jake opted to make a "Happy Box" claymation movie for his entry. All 4 of them won in their grades.

Hard to believe this is our last Halloween program at Montessori. Mrs. Call commented to me that everything this year with Maggie is "it" for the reign of the Roundys at her school. (We've obviously been going to this school a long time when I know every lyric to all 10 Halloween songs that the kids sang.)

I'll miss having my kids attend the school when Maggie finally graduates in the spring, but I am really ready to move on as well. But I have so appreciated what the school has taught my kids over the years.

The kids were over the moon when I told them that it was family photo time. And why wouldn't they be excited about it?....we've never had them taken for "reals". Typically, we prop the camera on top of the piano, set the timer, and SNAP!...family photo session is done! So, actually having someone other than the camera itself take our picture is a new thing for us.

The leaves are just bursting with color right now.

Though these photos aren't the "official" ones...still waiting for the disk with all our pictures...these are just some quick ones we took.

BLACK ISLAND FARMS FIELD TRIP

It was Maggie's first official kindergarten field trip. We took the big, yellow bus to Black Island Farms for a morning full of tractor rides, pumpkin picking, carrots to eat, fun toys to play on, animals to look at, and pig races to cheer on.

As part of Ian's birthday this year, he spent some time with both his grandparents. My kids really like the one-on-one time with their "elders" (haha!) and it's a good time for both. (Both sets of grandparents commented that Ian talked non-stop the entire time he was with them...probably because he could get a word in edgewise.)

With Grams & Gramps Garfield, he set off to spend his gift certificate at The Three Little Monkeys store. It didn't take him long to figure out what he wanted to buy...he said he spotted it because it was "San Diego Charger" blue. This little self-propelled kart has become a hit with our neighborhood. It's funny to watch the kids zig-zag their way down the sidewalk.

On his outing with Grams and Gramps Roundy, though Gramps couldn't make it because he had to go take a nap, his egg omelet he was cooking up right before Ian left with Gram Mad, inspired Ian to want an "egg, bacon, and cheese" sandwich, rather than Chick-a-Fila.

After peanut-butter Moo'd Jamba Juice and a set of Pokemon cards and an UNO game, Ian came back for lunch.

When the dads go camping, the family plays...

Brian and Kirk took off for an adventure down south in the Blanding area, so the kids and I, along with the cousins took off for the day to Thanksgiving Point to have some fun.

Though, first, we had to make a lunch stop at In N Out Burger.

Unfortunately, we didn't park fast enough and get to the front doors before the marching band came filing out of the bus. So, it took us awhile to get our burgers, fries and shakes...but, as usual, worth the wait!

Another outing...this time to the Gateway to see "How To Train Your Dragon". Great animation! I can't wait to see it in 3D. We don't go to 3D movies too often because Ian prefers "1D" movies. But I have to agree with him...I don't like them only because I just can't stand the glasses on glasses thing going on. I mean, my nose is only so long...but not long enough to have 2 pairs of glasses perched on it. Ian just doesn't like the whole 3D thing.

Of course, when we go to the Gateway, we always get our bubblegum fix. Since it was such a lovely day, after the movie, we spent the rest of the day browsing Dick's Sports, reading at Barnes and Noble, spending Liv's bday gift certificates at Old Navy, pricing a mini Mac at the Apple Store, smelling lotions at Bath & Body, wishing we had lots of money to spend at Anthropologe (well, I guess, that would just me wishing I could shop at this store), running into friends, and eating yummy food at Taifoon.

All year, each of the grades have been learning songs in their morning music class and finally they were ready to perform. The theme for the concert was "Let's Sing!". Each grade performed their repertoire of songs on their own night. Both Olivia and Chase had a speaking part for the 3rd grade performance. I did record Olivia's part, but she had a bad case of bronchitis and you can't understand a thing she says...it's actually kind of funny...and I think she mouthed most of the lyrics because she couldn't get any sound out...I would post pics of Jake's 5th grade performance (Ian/Kindergarten didn't get to have music class this year, so no performance), but he chose to go to soccer practice instead - he felt that would be more beneficial to his life than singing...

SATURDAY FUN

The third Saturday of each month, admittance into the UMFA is free. It is also when they host a free art project for kids. This month we were directed upstairs to view the litho prints of Pablo O'Higgins. We were to look for 3 things that appear in almost all his prints - dark, bold outlines, hats, and depictions of the field workers. After looking at the artwork, we went back downstairs to the art room where each of the kids were handed a large piece of white paper. On it, with crayons and oil pastels, they were to draw something inspired by O'Higgins work.

Following our outing at the museum, we headed to Jordan Commons to see "Diary of a Wimpy Kid". Ian has been eagerly anticipating the release of this movie. We own all the books and we've all read them. And we were all surprised that the movie was pretty good - quite a funny little movie.

LOST: SERIES FINALE

To start off Season 6 and, more importantly, the Series Finale of "Lost", we invited mom & dad and Seth over to watch the recap and the 2-hour opener of the show. Brian made an island-inspired dinner with baked orange salmon, a fresh vegetable salad, and pineapple spears for us to enjoy while we were watching. And mom brought fresh berries to top the most delicious vanilla icecream ever! (....um, that's my taste buds talkin'...they haven't had icecream, let alone dairy, for about a month, so the vanilla tasted all the more delicious!). At the end of the 3 hours, we all agreed that something has to be done with amount of commercial interruptions. As for the show itself, of course there are always more questions than answers and the added curiosity to see how this will all conclude in the next few months. But in the end, what is great about this show is that it makes you think and it's fun to share theories and look for connections with other people. A show like this doesn't come around too often.

GORGOZA PARK

It's been a few years since we've been to Gorgoza Park. We actually left Maggie behind because she was too young. We tried to go to the park a few weeks ago with Sarah and Owen, but it was too stormy to drive thru the canyon. It was a pretty nice day to go, though it did snow off and on the whole time we were there. In fact, it was also a pretty popular place. The last time we went there was hardly anyone there. But still it was a lot of fun....you know, the lazy man's version of sledding.

BIRTHDAY BANNER PROJECT

Allie invited me to a craft night she was having where they were going to make felt BIRTHDAY BANNER, but I wasn't able to go. So instead, Amanda and I tried to recreate the birthday banner all on our own. Together we got our supplies, spent an evening making a smaller version of the one that Allie and her friends were making. We tried to keep it simple and generic with our color choices and we used an assortment of wool felt and the cheap felt too. We used a CD as our template for the back piece and then I happen to have some templates I picked up from Hobby Lobby that were circular-shaped but with different decorative edges. They were smaller than the CD circle, so they fit perfectly on top. To do the letters, I just free-cut them out of felt and some fabric. With felt glue and some simple straight stitches we put them together. Using a small hole punch and ribbon, we finished up the banners. Pretty easy.
